Climate Sensitive Waste Management

Serbia
GIZ, 2019 - 2021

By taking up the challenge to reduce GHG emissions and move toward a circular economy (CE) waste sector, Serbia is moving towards the successful EU-accession and contributes to the fight against global warming and the overwhelming worldwide challenge to reduce plastic and other harmful wastes. Therefore, the core objective of the TC-measure DKTI Climate Sensitive Waste Management in Serbia was: “A waste circular economy contributing to climate change mitigation is introduced in selected regions of Serbia”. These include the regions of Novi Sad, Kruševac, and Lapovo.

The project is divided into three fields of activities: (1) Policy and strategy consultation on the national level, (2) Planning and implementation on the regional level and (3) Implementation of good practices on the local level – broad impact (upscaling).

The assignment included the following outputs:

  • Guidelines for the implementation of CE oriented value chains in the private sector are developed for 2 secondary raw materials (e.g. different packaging materials, organic residues from food production).
  • 20 SMEs have developed action plans for improved resource efficiency including the use of secondary raw materials in their production processes (e.g. waste plastic, metals, paper/cardboard)
  • Best practices of a circular economy-oriented waste management to mitigate GHG emissions are introduced at local/ municipal level.
